No Fear
Our newly adopted house rabbit has been a-MA-zing. We brought him home just over a week ago and he is already litter box trained. Considering he’s only 7 weeks old, that’s a miracle! And, he truly loves us. He’s the most affectionate little fur-ball anyone could want.
The thing that stands out most in our minds with this rabbit, though, is his lack of fear. Our previous house rabbits required at least a couple weeks before they enjoyed our presence. Even after they grew to love and trust us, they always had an easily triggered flight response.
This little guy (named Buddy) has the least amount of fear we’ve ever seen in a rabbit. Oh, sure, the metal dish rack with silverware clanging to the floor the second day he was home startled him – as it did us! But other sounds and smells that always sent his predecessors running haven’t phased Buddy.
What’s so wonderful to see is how much of his little soul shines through without that cloak of fear. How much he’s already learned without the restrictions of fear. How deeply he sleeps due to his ability to relax and rest.
Beyond those sensible fears that save our skin from danger, we all have an inner world laced with fears, some of which we aren’t consciously aware. Unless we have cultivated self-awareness and mindfulness, we can make decisions out of fear. Maybe they aren’t BIG fears, but even the slightest fear adds a layer that can hamper the path to our dreams.
Sure, you can get hurt when you have no fear. Buddy could DIE by trying to jump over the gate into the “forbidden universe” (a.k.a the not-bunny-proofed-part-of-the-house). But at least his demise would be from doing what he loved most, what is most inherently a part of his soul – exploring the world, trying new things, daring to stretch himself beyond his current abilities.
Thank you, Buddy Rabbit, for the reminder to live fearlessly! That’s how I want to live. Passionately, openly, and with stretch in my soul. With No Fear. Below are some quotes I’ve collected that help me quell fearful thoughts and feelings:
Fear is never a reason for quitting; it is only an excuse. ~ Norman Vincent Peale
Ultimately we know deeply that the other side of every fear is freedom. ~ Mary Ferguson
Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy. ~ Dale Carnegie
Many of our fears are tissue-paper-thin, and a single courageous step would carry us clear through them. ~ Brendan Francis
A mind focused on doubt and fear cannot focus on the journey to victory. ~ Mike Jones
“Fearless” is living in spite of those things that scare you to death. ~ Taylor Swift
To use fear as the friend it is, we must retrain and reprogram ourselves. We must persistently and convincingly tell ourselves that the fear is here–with its gift of energy and heightened awareness–so we can do our best and learn the most in the new situation. ~ Peter Williams
