Where Did They Go?
Many times I’m asked “how did you come up with this idea?” when someone is looking at a painting. AKA “Are you crazy or on drugs?” Yes, those have been real questions, lol…

Outdoor camping studio
Last summer a visitor to my booth commented that my work reminded her of the children’s book “Where the Butterflies Go”. Thank you, Susie! 🙂 The thought grabbed my interest so strongly that I regularly ponder it. But, a distinct visual idea has eluded me until now.

Shadows on my canvas
While painting outdoors in my camping studio, I wanted to see if I could duplicate the shadow patterns on my canvas from the bush in front of my table.

Adding color
First add some color, then more colors. Then take away color, and add new ones. Add shapes, change shapes. Oh! There’s a butterfly!
Ahhhh, this is where they go! As I refined the first one, I saw more peeking through the leaves and the result is the sweet little painting below. It’s a process I love and is just one of the ways a work comes together.

My painting on their cover!
Unfortunately, the butterflies do not come to Lincoln in October, but you can! A group of 7 artists from Lincoln and beyond are participating in Alpine Artisans’ Tour of the Arts. We will have our work displayed in the Lincoln Community Hall from 10-5 on Saturday & Sunday October 14-15th.
If I have your snail mail address, watch for a postcard in the 2nd half of October with all the November show dates.
